Zoë Harcombe, Ph.D., concedes The Game Changers tells “a good story,” but that’s as far as the 2019 documentary’s accolades should go, she suggests. In this presentation from Dec. 15, 2019, Harcombe offers an incisive and often humorous critique of the arguments the film makes in favor of a plant-based diet.
The Game Changers bases its support of plant-based eating on three common arguments, Harcombe explains:
1. It’s healthier than non-vegan diets.
2. It’s better for the animals.
3. It’s better for the planet.
Since the majority of the film is devoted to the nutrition argument, Harcombe focuses her attention there as well.
After noting that, despite the movie’s claims, there is a dearth of scientific evidence for going plant-based, Harcombe turns with wry humor to the film’s burrito experiments. The science in these and the movie’s other experiments is deeply flawed, she claims.
One experiment, which follows the Tennessee Titans as they turn to vegan eating, “is a great example that the standard American diet is rubbish,” Harcombe says. She argues any apparent benefits experienced by the athletes were probably attributable to their trading of junk food for whole foods. “Now the whole food just happens to be plant-based,” she notes, but “how good could they have been if their whole food diet had been animal-based?” she asks.
Finally, Harcombe argues the film tries to gloss over the nutritional deficiencies in a vegan diet by suggesting everyone should take supplements, not only those who have gone plant-based. But those who follow a healthy diet of whole foods that include animal products do not need supplements, she claims: “A healthy diet provides the nutrients that we need. A healthy diet does not require supplements. A vegan diet requires supplements. De facto, a vegan diet is not healthy.”

Her take on Michael Greger suffers from the same problem she purports to be addressing–namely a lack of in-depth study. In fact Greger has much to say on B12, DHA, and most everything in the slide where she tries to argue that the diet he proposes in deficient.
is she going to talk about floyd-19?
James Cameron wants to sink humanity this time? Haha
As Dr. Harbcombe so adroitly showed here, vegan arguments in favor of their diet are much like their food – its dressed up to look impressive, but they really lack substance.
Love her! 💚
Great video!
Sorry but nowadays plants have 10% vitamins and minerals, så we have to take supplements
1. The important take away from the study is how little meat was eaten by the 7th-day Adventists that was significant and important for quotation. Not whether the paper used vegetarian correctly. The studies are relevant.
2. Yes, carbohydrates fatten you up. If you eat too many, because excess calories fatten you up. Which is actually easier to do with fat as it is more calorie dense than protein or carbs. Meat triggers higher IGF-1 and contributes to insulin resistance. Both which contribute to weight gain…
I didn't watch any further in the video after that.
Summary
Failed vegan makes excuses.
If you're going to pose a valid counter-argument then back it up with scientific evidence and include those studies with references for everyone to see. Otherwise this is simply yet another "opinion", which everyone has one of those.
You're paid by multi billion dollar meat industry so can't believe you at all.
Just after Game Changers came out their was a interview with Arnie in Men's health https://youtu.be/jFk-L7Wcg0g as he says: "Is it just the food, or do you want to bust me because I'm not 100% Vegan". We're then shown the front part of "my fridge in the office" Prominently displayed is a big bowl of eggs inside. He then makes himself a protein shake using almond milk, cherry juice, a banana, and whole raw egg including the shell (extra calcium). He then goes onto to say that "my favorite thing to cook is steak"! And he cuts out all the sugar products like bread. As arnie says "the key is not rely on supplaments, to rely on good food, lots of green's, lots of fruit, lots of protein's". And that "Cheat days would come up regularly". So yes he eat's a plant based diet, its mostly plants but includes eggs and steak, and has cheat days!!
Interesting points. Thanks
Why wasn't Zoe on TNG, she is such a hottie.😉
Zoë Harcombe: great as always. Thank you.
anyone knows where I can purchase the top she is wearing?
There was a meantion of a Joe, whom would cover more around sustainability 16:05 – who is this and where can it be found?
Does the b-12 vegans need come from animal sources or is it some gmo vat or is it petrochemicals?
gladiators were vegetarians because they were slaves… ok? doesn’t change the fact they were vegetarians
arnold was a lot stronger looking back then… yeah, he was also a lot younger and training in the gym a lot more and not to mention he was probably doping
you really think the football team was performing better just because they occasionally had lunch together? that’s a really weak argument
the guys eating bean burritos got erections because they were dreaming about meat… seriously? that’s your argument?
I love CrossFit and I’m not vegetarian or vegan, but this lady is not debunking anything. Vegans often get accused of being part of a cult, but the same is true for us who do Crossfit and it’s really annoying. CrossFit people are trying to be more fit and vegans are trying to kill less animals. We should respect each other and stop assuming that everyone has a political agenda or that everything is propaganda driven. In short, don’t let what other people eat upset your stomach
Loved that talk, amazing 😂
Being Vegan I have to agree with her…the movie has many faults! It doesn't help the Vegan cause! Being Vegan comes down to a simple choice! No one should beeing making wild claims about it… Like I said it's simply a choice
erections 😍
Is she from Starfleet?
Did expect more from CrossFit(R) … will put my subscription elsewhere.
Brilliant as always Zoe 👍
I was expecting a much better de bunking than this. What a bunch of non sense and straw mans.
True! Very entertaining, but oh booooy are there a lot of jumping to conclusions and incorrect derisions from studies. Some of the narrative borders very much on intentional dishonesty.
I love her!!!
Great presentation
I'm amazed at the efforts made to discredit vegetarianism and veganism. There is no good argument for eating animals/animal products – none. Protein is acquired from plants. Plants also don't put saturated fat and cholesterol in the body. End of story. There is absolutely no "dearth" of information to support a plant based diet – that is complete nonsense. Zoe is clearly biased and made many misleading, flippant statements – very disappointing.
I just lost all respect for this channel …
That is one healthy looking woman!
Fact the more animal protein you take in the higher the chances of you getting cancer or heart disease. There is no argument against a whole food plant base diet.
Traducción please spanish
what a shitty video… just couldn't finish, though would be serious scientific nutritional arguments about why should eat animal protein, instead I see a person joking and saying that gladiators were just slaves… they were not… they fought for their master's glory, so masters will feed them with the necessary food that makes them have enough energy for winning the battle and that's just the point of that argument
I love this woman!
I feel like the overall takeaways should be. You don’t have to cut meat out entirely, but you should definitely eat A LOT LESS MEAT. Most people in general eat too much meat in my opinion and should eat more veggies no matter what their “diet” is
Anybody else notice the stuffed alligator in Arnie's office? He's such a douche nozzle.
Okay so you got all these people debunking the game changers and I personally am not vegan but I don't eat red meat. Anyone who has watched the Joe Rogan podcast with James Wilkes has heard his argument. And I must say it's a good one. I don't think he argued every point successfully but overall it was a good argument. At this point anyone who wants to debunk the movie should ho head-to-head with Mr Wilks.
