Sonar Subhunt is a lights and sounds three dimensional simulation board game from 1961 (what a mouthful!) Players place subs and mines under hinged doors in the top of board. Players alternate firing salvos to destroy opponents subs. The board features “periscopes” to peek under the surface of the water. The winner is the player with submarines still in the water or a player loses if it they have hit four mines. Its 55 years old and still in perfect (perfect enough) working order!
Lets see how it plays!

I got this for Christmas in 1961 and played it for years. Great memories. Thanks for posting!
One of my top favorite games in the 60's along with Tudor electric football and battling tops. Today's kids want computer games or nothing
Great review, just picked up a copy. Buzzer works, but can't get the bulb to light up. Bulb that came with it works out of the game, but doesn't seem to fit in the holder correctly, was wondering if you could take a pic of your bulb to see if I just need a different style.
I got mine in the early 60's from a small(very small) mom and pop hobby shop. It had been on the shelf for a while and he reduced the price. He had a lot of old models etc. I picked up over the years. If you have decent lighting you can usually tell if where there is an object beneath the screen if you look directly down, not at an angle.
Found this game complete at an antique store, but didn’t buy it because I couldn’t think of any solo rules. Anybody have any ideas for solo rules?
My brothers and I got this game and played it almost nonstop for days. It was easily the best present of that Christmas, probably about 1963 or so. We would play it in the (almost) dark, so the effect of the sonar marker would stand out better, when it lit up with a hit. A little cheating was possible with a low battery, as the mine strikes would not buzz loudly or quickly enough, so a "sensitive hand" could tell if they were onto one, and back away before the buzzer nailed them with a mine strike. What a great game this was. Great to see it in such remarkable condition.
I'm 67… me and my friends played with this game for HOURS on end. Thanks for the memories. It was still in my parents basement when I went off to college in 1969.
Remember this game as a young kid in the early ‘60s. Had so much fun playing it. Ended up in the trash I guess. Like to have it for my grandkids now.
I'm 64 years old. When I was nine or ten I remember being bombarded by commercials for this game, and being a devotee of everything military (yeah, those were different times… a few years later I had long hair and was protesting the Vietnam war), I begged and begged my parents to get me one for Christmas. My Mom looked everywhere and there were none to be found (not even in the huge Sears Christmas catalog) One of the major disappointments of my childhood.
