Aliens versus Predator 2 is a science fiction first-person shooter computer game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Fox Interactive for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X computers in 2001. It is a sequel to Aliens versus Predator (1999); both games are based on the characters of the Alien and Predator media franchises as well as the Alien vs. Predator crossover series.
An expansion pack titled Aliens versus Predator 2: Primal Hunt was released in 2002. A “Gold Edition” of Aliens versus Predator 2 followed, combining both the original game and the expansion pack into a single package.
Like its predecessor, Aliens versus Predator 2 allows the player to choose one of three characters: an Alien, Predator or human Colonial Marine. Each character has different objectives, abilities and weapons at their disposal. The single-player campaigns present the player with conventional series of levels that are designed around the abilities of each character.
As the Colonial Marine, the player uses a number of weapons to combat Aliens and Predators. The Marine wears armor for protection, and uses an image intensifier, flashlight and flares to improve visibility in dark areas.
When playing as the Predator, the player uses a variety of weapons from the Predator films such as wrist blades, a throwing disc, and shoulder-mounted energy weapons. The Predator is more durable than the human or the Alien and can survive falls from greater heights than the human. It can use a cloaking device to become invisible and several different modes of vision to help in the detection of enemies, including infrared vision and a mode sensitive to electrical systems. Unlike in the previous game, the Predator in Aliens versus Predator 2 recharges its energy supply using a personal item.
As an Alien the player can explore most of the game’s environments freely, even climbing across walls and ceilings. However, the Alien has no weapons and must use its claws, tail, and jaws to attack enemies. The player can also use a form of echolocation in dark areas and can detect pheromones to discern human or Predator enemies. The Alien can drop from any height without injury and is the fastest of the three player characters.

looking back, the game was confusing and there were some programming flaws (the core area door fails to open and isn't fully rendered for example). the game needs to be better polished and there is no map screen (not a big issue for the marine but the alien and predator campaigns need it.)
It's not bad but it's not Deus Ex either

"Its devoid of humor" What about in the start where you hear a guy over the comms "That better be a boot. Tell me thats a boot." and you expect shit to go down and then you just hear him say "Hey! Its a boot!"

idk but i think that the predator is even more powerful in avp 2 than in avp 1. for example, in avp 2 you can pick the spears fired from the speargun back up (which is not possible in avp 1) and recharge your energy at any time as long as you have your energy device (while in avp 1 you had to rely on energy pick-ups that can only be used once). furthermore, your cloaking device, energy pistol and shoulder cannon are way more effective in avp 2. seriously, the shoulder cannon kills everything with two to three hits (without even charging it that is) and the secondary fire mode of the pistol even stuns enemies in place, while barely even using any energy at all.
so, apart from the thing that your weapons are taken away from you at one point and the fact that the netgun is indeed a bit gimmicky (but not entirely useless!), everything that’s said here about the predator campaign is utter bs.

@1:59 is that Adam Driver…? 😀 Seriously though this was a great game. The marine campaign was shit inducing. You felt like a badass as the Predator. The xeno campaign was a little nausea inducing climbing up the walls and ceiling.

As a former AVP2 clan member of the 9thcmd, i recently got a refurbished dell computer with XP just for the game. Years ago I saved a treasure trove of mods and maps and other things for the game. Boatloads. I got the game installed and updated to 1096 and thats where its going to stay. Ive loaded the mod manager and got it working. Ive got around 70 single player maps and only 2 or 3 have had corruption but Ive got numerous saved copies including zip file originals. Our own mod, 9thcmd Multimod runs good. My Pilot mod is running. Redmod3 Armageddon and Star wars mods running. Utter chaos mod running. Others as well. One of my favorites is the crab cracker pred dart gun. Its as fast as a machine gun but pred darts. Take it in to a Coop map with AI aliens to blast and they are cracked up. Too easy, yeah, but fun as hell if you just want to kill aliens. Many mods have different characters and weapons. Spear throwing, acid spitting aliens, Queens etc. Human and pred nukes and more. Fighting aliens as a pred hand to hand with claws is most fun. Im not putting any nee patches in the game. Its running old school with all the great stuff of old. Im also not putting the computer online and get any of those update nightmares. It works as is just as I want it. Theres like 500 to 600 maps. I was on a saving spree back then to preserve what I could. This game still rocks and a salute to all the clans of old including our cousins at the SGC. Ancient One, where ever you are, great games back in the day.

Need this game in my life, what's the specs needed on an older PC to run this. Would prefer to run it on a retro rig, rather than try to run it on a new rig.

Dude, I'd play quarantine on multiplayer for hourssss when I was younger. Real shame the dedicated servers got taken down. I think you can still play through mods, and there's still a dedicated community out there to play it with.

You can charge the plasma caster so it fires more powerful shots. Just hold down the left mouse button.
It uses more energy though.

I really have no idea what is keeping this in the abandonware status, surely Fox or Sega technically owns this right? I love that the community has made it easier to find but this game deserves to be on Steam and GOG.

Eh, I suspect the dev's were trying to go for a stealthy approach as the Predator to try and imitate the behavior displayed in the movies

A true classic, and a great FPS before all the cookie-cutter COD games that came after it. There was nothing else quite like it, great story elements, the graphics were super impressive, the gameplay was fun, and the multiplayer was a blast. A 10/10 in my book.

It's lame how you almost can't sneak at all as the xeno. It only works when you're in the vents, otherwise every single enemy soldier knows where you are. I also don't like how when you're on a rampage, it's really easy to rip someone's head off which robs you of a feeding opportunity. Otherwise the xeno life-cycle is awesome.
